Soft Light Ltd was commission to re-design their ERP system, that was 11 years old and DOS based. The objective was to design a robust WEB based system utilising modern technologies. It also had to be cost effective, easy to manage, extend and deploy.

We started with writing business specifications and explaining to the management the framework of the specifications allowing them to participate in the process.

After completion of the business specifications, the technical specification was written and approved. Using MSF we prepared conceptual, logical and physical designs as well as risk management and a timeframe with milestones papers.

We also produced the code base, tiers interaction, database frameworks as well working through the database porting process. The database had to be ported from the legacy system (dBase III) into SQL Server 2000.

More resources were introduced into the project, so it could be completed within the approved framework. An extra programmer was hired and trained to assist in seeing the project to fruition.
Consultation was provided on the best hardware and software configuration, deployment platform and security issues.

The project is now in an intermediate stage, where the elements of the functionality are released for limited testing and the framework has been fully completed. Team members have been trained with the framework and advanced testing has been planned as well as adding functionality as required.

One of the interesting parts of the projects was designing the B2B pipe for EDI with major clients. We advised on using XML and custom VB parser for electronic document interchange and implementing parts of the framework for this.
